Scott’s Hotrods 1966 Chevy Suburban – The “Maytag Refrigerator”

Meet the Scott’s Hotrods 1966 Chevrolet Suburban, affectionately known around the shop as the “Maytag Refrigerator.” What started as a classic ’66 Suburban with a tired 305 has been transformed into a modern, LSA-powered restomod showcasing just how far the original 1963-1966 Chevy C10/Suburban platform can be taken with the right suspension, drivetrain and chassis upgrades.

Rather than replacing the original frame, we completely transformed it using a Scott’s Hotrods Bolt-On IFS, Parallel 4-Bar Rear Suspension, Step Notch, Moser Ford 9-inch rear end and Scott’s Aluminum EFI Fuel Tank. Power comes from a supercharged GM LSA backed by a Tremec TKX manual transmission, creating a classic Suburban that combines vintage styling with modern horsepower, handling, braking and drivability.

A 1966 Suburban Built to Drive

This isn’t a trailer queen built around a spec sheet. The goal was to create a 1966 Chevy Suburban restomod that could actually be driven and enjoyed, combining the unmistakable styling and character of an early Chevrolet Suburban with the steering, suspension, brakes, drivetrain and creature comforts expected from a modern performance vehicle.

Inside, the build features Vintage Air climate control, Dakota Digital gauges, a Scott’s custom gauge bezel, Sparc steering wheel and Hudson Hotrod interior, while modern audio adds another level of comfort. Outside, the refreshed Warm White and Black paint is complemented by Hot Rods By Boyd HRX SUB ZERO wheels wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires.

Modern Suspension on the Original 1966 Suburban Frame

You don’t need a complete replacement chassis to dramatically transform the way a classic Chevy truck drives. Our 1966 Shop Suburban retains its original factory frame, but the outdated front and rear suspension has been replaced with modern Scott’s Hotrods components designed to completely change the way this big classic handles, steers, stops and puts power to the pavement.

Up front, the Suburban features our C10 Bolt-On Independent Front Suspension with a heavy-duty one-piece crossmember, Tubular Upper & Lower A-Arms, CNC-machined adjustable upper A-Arm rod ends, built-in anti-dive, RideTech Single-Adjustable Coilovers, power rack & pinion steering, forged steel drop spindles and a front torsion-spline sway bar. Massive 14-inch Wilwood disc brakes with 6-piston calipers provide the stopping power needed to complement the modern suspension and supercharged LSA.

Scott’s 4-Bar Rear Suspension & Moser 9-Inch

The rear of the original Suburban frame received an equally serious transformation with a Scott’s Hotrods Parallel 4-Bar Rear Suspension, Step Notch and Scott’s Watt’s Link. Heavy-duty machined link bars and CNC-machined adjustable rod ends locate a Moser Ford 9-inch rear end equipped with 35-spline axles and a 3.70 WaveTrac third member. A rear torsion-spline sway bar and 14-inch Wilwood disc brakes complete the rear suspension package.

The result is a complete front-to-rear suspension system designed to work together. Instead of simply adding horsepower to a nearly 60-year-old truck platform, the suspension, steering, brakes and rear end were upgraded to properly support the performance of the finished vehicle.

Supercharged LSA Power + Tremec TKX

Under the hood, the Maytag Refrigerator packs a supercharged GM LSA engine mounted using Scott’s Hotrods LSA Motor Mounts. Power is sent through a Tremec TKX manual transmission supported by a Scott’s dropout transmission mount, giving this big-body 1966 Suburban the combination of modern supercharged V8 power and a true manual transmission.

Supporting the drivetrain are a PRC radiator, Billet Specialties Tru Trac accessory drive, Scott’s stainless steel headers and exhaust, Flowmaster mufflers, stainless steel fuel and brake lines, and a Scott’s Aluminum EFI Fuel Tank with an in-tank fuel pump.
