Why is Scott’s Hotrods’
1931 Buick Series 50 Chassis Different?

Transform your 1931 Buick Series 50 into a completely modern-driving custom without sacrificing the unmistakable style that makes an early Buick so unique. Scott’s Hotrods builds every 1931 Buick Series 50 chassis to order, engineered specifically around your vehicle, drivetrain, wheel and tire combination, desired ride height and intended use. Whether you’re building an elegant traditional cruiser, a modern restomod, a high-horsepower street machine or an ultra-low custom designed to lay frame, Scott’s can build the chassis around your vision.

This isn’t a universal frame adapted to fit an early Buick. Scott’s combines a purpose-built full frame with our Rear Steer Independent Front Suspension, rack & pinion steering, Tubular Upper & Lower A-Arms, Parallel 4-Bar rear suspension and Moser Ford 9-inch rear end to completely modernize the foundation underneath your 1931 Buick. Choose a performance-oriented Coilover Chassis or go all-in with a SuperSlam Airbag Chassis for an adjustable, ground-hugging stance. Every chassis is manufactured using heavy-duty materials, precision CNC-machined components, Grade 8 hardware and 100% TIG-welded construction.

1931 Buick Series 50 Chassis Overview

The 1931 Buick Series 50 deserves more than a generic suspension upgrade. Scott’s Hotrods replaces the original chassis and outdated suspension technology with a completely modern, built-to-order foundation engineered to dramatically improve handling, steering response, ride quality, braking capability, chassis rigidity and overall drivability.

At the front, Scott’s utilizes our proprietary Rear Steer IFS, placing the rack & pinion behind the front crossmember to accommodate the packaging requirements of early vehicles. This is NOT a Mustang II suspension. The Scott’s IFS uses a massive one-piece 2″x4″x3/16″-wall crossmember, heavy-duty 1-1/8″x1/4″-wall DOM Tubular Upper & Lower A-Arms, built-in anti-dive, CNC-machined stainless steel adjustable upper A-Arm rod ends and oversized serviceable ball joints.

Out back, our Parallel 4-Bar rear suspension locates a Moser Ford 9-inch rear end using heavy-duty adjustable DOM link bars and CNC-machined stainless steel rod ends. Combined with your choice of Coilovers or SuperSlam Airbag suspension, the result is an early Buick that retains its unmistakable pre-war styling while gaining the road manners, adjustability and performance expected from a modern custom car.

Why Rear Steer IFS on a 1931 Buick?

I would definitely add this because “Rear Steer” is all over the pricing and feature list without much explanation. The current chassis includes Scott’s Rear Steer IFS and a rear-steer rack & pinion.

The Scott’s Hotrods 1931 Buick Series 50 chassis utilizes our Rear Steer Independent Front Suspension, meaning the rack & pinion is positioned behind the front suspension crossmember rather than in front of it. This configuration is particularly well suited to early vehicle applications where engine, radiator, grille, frame and suspension packaging create different requirements than later cars.

Most importantly, Scott’s Rear Steer IFS is not a Mustang II kit and is not based around universal Mustang II suspension geometry. The suspension is engineered specifically for the application and features a heavy-duty one-piece crossmember with Tubular Upper & Lower A-Arms, built-in anti-dive and modern rack & pinion steering. The result is a clean installation with modern steering response, improved suspension geometry and a foundation designed specifically for your custom 1931 Buick.

Coilover or SuperSlam – Build Your Buick Your Way

Coilover 1931 Buick Chassis

For builders who want modern handling, excellent road manners and a performance-oriented stance, the Scott’s Coilover 1931 Buick Chassis is the ideal foundation. Aldan American Single-Adjustable Coilovers are standard, with additional performance shock options available. The Coilover chassis delivers a controlled, responsive ride while allowing your Buick to sit considerably lower and perform far beyond the capabilities of its original suspension.

SuperSlam 1931 Buick Chassis

Want your 1931 Buick Series 50 to lay frame? That’s where the Scott’s SuperSlam Chassis comes in. Rather than treating air suspension as an afterthought, the SuperSlam configuration is designed around an extremely low air-ride stance, giving builders the ability to drop their Buick dramatically when parked and raise it to a practical driving height when it’s time to hit the road.

For a big-bodied pre-war Buick, the result can be absolutely killer: long, low and aggressive, while still riding on a modern suspension system underneath. Pair that stance with Scott’s Rear Steer IFS, rack & pinion steering, Parallel 4-Bar rear suspension and a Moser Ford 9-inch, and you’ve got the foundation for a serious custom, restomod or show-winning Buick.

Built Around Your Engine & Transmission

Every Scott’s 1931 Buick custom chassis is built-to-order, allowing us to manufacture the chassis around the drivetrain you actually plan to use. Whether you’re keeping your Buick traditionally powered or building an LS-swapped, LT-powered or completely unconventional restomod, engine and transmission placement can be incorporated into the chassis configuration from the beginning.

That built-to-order approach is especially valuable on an early vehicle like the 1931 Buick, where drivetrain packaging, steering clearance, exhaust routing, floor clearance and ride height can all become major considerations. Instead of trying to make a generic chassis work around your build, Scott’s builds the chassis around the car you’re creating.
